What is a Solar Cell?

We are hearing much about small gadgets like calculators, watches, and small toy cars are being run by Solar Power. There are remote cell sites and other remote Telecommunication mini-exchanges that are supported by it. So what is behind this technology? It comes from tiny solar cells combined together to produce the required electric power you need.
What is a solar cell then? A solar cell or photovoltaic cell is a device that converts solar energy into electricity by the photovoltaic effect. These solar cells are assembled in arrays to form a solar module or photovoltaic arrays. Solar power derive its power from the sun by using Solar Cells

By combining a group of photo-voltaic arrays, it generates renewable electricity which you can substitute as a source of electric power to Radio equipments in the remote areas where no commercial power line is available. Photo-voltaic electricity is increasingly becoming popular in deploying in a grid-tied electrical systems. The definition from Wikipedia Encyclopedia of a grid-tied electrical systems is it is a semi-autonomous electrical generation system which links to the mains to feed excess capacity back to the local mains electrical grid. When insufficient electricity is generated, or the batteries are not fully charged, electricity drawn from the mains grid can make up the short fall.
Solar Cells are primarily manufactured in the following countries: Japan, China, Germany, Taiwan and USA. The life span of solar cells is about twenty years. Just like when you want to build a house, you either hire an architect to draw up a plan for you or buy a model house with complete specifications. The same is true with building a Solar Power System. You need an expert professional to do it for you or buy a standard Solar Power System model.
Solar Cell Technology has improved a lot and the manufacturing process has been re-engineered many times. Hence, the end product keeps on becoming more attractive to the global community. It is also worth mentioning that we should continue doing advance research on how we can improve the performance of Solar Cells.
